Comparing European care markets

In this week’s infographic we take a closer look at the for-profit adult and elderly care market across Europe. We compare the size of for-profit markets relative to population size across different countries (Euro expenditure per capita) and show which types of care (nursing homes, assisted living and domiciliary care) predominate in those countries. To read more see our intelligence reports on Adult Care, Assisted Living, Domiciliary Care and Nursing Homes.

The nursing homes sector is more established than assisted living and domiciliary care and has the largest expenditure range. Taking the size of the for-profit market and dividing it by the population  shows Russia at €1 per head spent on nursing homes at the lower end and Finland at the other, with a €258 per head expenditure making it the largest market relative to population size. Finland is closely followed by the UK at €252 per capita.

Domiciliary care is the next largest market but whilst many countries may have a domiciliary care market it is most developed in Spain, with €127 per capita, followed by France, at €119, and the UK, at €90.

Adult care is the next largest market and is well-developed in Denmark (€180 per capita) and Finland (€101 per capita).

The assisted living sector is a small market currently almost everywhere. The exception is Switzerland where it amounts to €123 per capita.

Some countries have little to no private/for-profit sector for some aspects of care. This is often the case for long term adult care. In some cases this is just of matter of how things are funded but in other markets even for-profit provision is restricted.
