European hospital market consolidates

This week’s infographic shows how Europe’s for-profit hospital market has consolidated in recent years, with several large mergers of national players re-shaping the table of biggest operators.

While German-Spanish hospital group Fresenius Helios has been by far the largest operator since 2012, the top 2-5 has changed remarkably since 2012, and even since a similar table we did covering up to 2018.

Italian groups San Donato and Swiss group Hirslanden have fallen out of the top 5 and been replaced by pan-European player Ramsay Sante/Capio and French hospital chain Elsan.

German Asklepios has consolidated its position as the second-largest with the acquisition of Rhoen (it appears below Ramsay here but that is because the Rhoen was only consolidated for one half of 2020).

Some 2020 figures are estimates based on the wider fall in the market, where operators have not disclosed figures yet.
