For-profit fertility sector growing strongly

The European fertility sector has been growing strongly, at around 5% per annum, and in some places even more strongly than this. The strong growth in the sector is driven by increasing demand, which is driven by a decline in fertility and the increasing social acceptability of IVF treatment.

The decline in fertility is driven by a range of factors, some better understood than others. People are having children later, rates of obesity are up and lifestyles are changing. On top of this, there are an increasing number of same sex couples wanting to have children.

The sector performed better than expected in 2021, with pent-up demand after lockdowns. But demand from people traveling abroad for IVF treatment hasn’t yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels, as travel restrictions are still in place.
