For-profit oncology consolidation in Europe

This week, we look at the extent to which the for-profit oncology market is consolidated in four major European markets – France, Germany, UK and Spain. These figures are a snapshot of the position based on revenues in 2020 taken from HBI Intelligence.

You can see the data behind this infographic in our oncology (outpatient) report in HBI Intelligence, and our company database.

Red portions of the dial above relate to the revenue earned by the top five players in each country as a percentage of the total market, green represents the remainder. As of 2020, France had the most top 5 consolidated market with the likes of Clinique du Pont Saint Vaast and Ramsay controlling over half of the market.

Spain is less consolidated and has around 24% consolidation in the for-profit sector, dominated by the likes of Genesis Care and Grupo Hospiten.

Germany and UK are the least consolidated, as in both cases the five largest actors control only about 10% of the market.

Italy is one of Europe’s smallest for-profit oncology markets (€390m) and has therefore been excluded from the infographic. Outpatient radiotherapy is limited by restrictions on private patients in Italy, and the main for-profit market is the operation of radiotherapy equipment within public hospitals and the private hospital market. The market is growing slowly due to the stagnant for-profit market and the unpredictable nature of its ‘outsourcing’ contracts, at around 1%.
