Glassdoor ratings of Europe’s largest healthcare services players

This week HBI gathers together one possible indicator of employee happiness at some of the largest for-profit healthcare services players across Europe: Glassdoor.

The rating site is far from the be-all and end-all of employee satisfaction in a company, but does carry reputational weight. Many prospective employees use the website when trying to assess where they want to work, meaning a low score could have a impact on recruitment.

We only included companies with a minimum of €300m sales in Europe and who have at least 20 Glassdoor ratings. Hence, the selection is more skewed towards companies in geographies where Glassdoor has a presence – typically English-speaking countries – and international operators. Those groups in Spain, Italy and the Nordics generally had too few reviews to be included.

We have colour coded by ownership type. DomusVi and Bupa sit at the top with a score of 3.9 with Affidea and Alliance Medical at the bottom with 2.1 and 2.5 respectively. Affidea said in response that it has a staff engagement score 4% higher than the average in the European healthcare industry at 58%, found through a study of 9,000+ of its employees and led by Kincentric. “Since then, to offer an example, in Lithuania, Affidea has been awarded twice as Best Employer across all industries in the Baltics.”

Alliance Medical said it has conducted multiple employee engagement surveys that have an average response of over 70%. The most recent results showed overall positive or neutral employee engagement of over 80%. It also pointed out that the number of reviews is “not an accurate representation of the business”, with 39 reviews posted since 2014 and around 3000 people employed.

Although there’s no hard and fast correlation with ownership type, more listed companies sit at the top of the table with private equity taking the mid- to low-tier. Many of the more negative reviews talked about the cost-cutting that users claim comes with private equity ownership.
