Graphic: How French private hospital tariffs changed in 2019

In this week’s graphic, we visualise how France is pushing the outmigration of healthcare through tariff adjustments.

Technological advances and improved processes mean more and more procedures can be done in a day setting. Hospitals in all developed markets are having to adapt as payors incentivise fewer inpatient stays and more ambulatory treatments through tariff changes. France is a good example and the infographic below visualises the private acute hospital (for-profit and non-profit) price adjustments from 2018 to 2019.

The rise or fall is found along the X-axis, with standard or inpatient tariffs shown by the green dots and outpatient or short-stay tariffs for those same procedures in orange.

The actual tariff amount is on the Y-axis, which we’ve limited in the interest of clarity. Some tariffs go up to €25,000 but for those above €1,000 there is little year-on-year change, for obvious reasons, and there are also many fewer outpatient procedures to compare. Hover over the dot for the procedure name (in French) as well as the tariff in 2018.

Alternatively, see the actual movement by switching between the 2018 and 2019 tabs in the graphic below.

This provides just a snapshot of the tariff landscape, as it only shows several hundred out of a 2-2,500-strong price list and excludes many adjustments and extra money that hospitals could get for quality.
