Inflow of doctors to Europe’s top five healthcare markets

Migration of health care workforce frequently makes headline news, but in this infographic we use OECD data to take a closer look at the inflow of doctors in to the top five European healthcare markets since 2015. We then provide a breakdown of country of origin for those countries in the last reported year.

France has seen a steady reduction in foreign doctors, notable representation from Romania – 233, Italy – 107, Algeria – 104 and Belgium – 85. To read more about health care in France take a look at French healthcare report found here.

Germany saw a slight incline from 2018-2019 but has been generally trending downwards over the past five years. Again there is notable representation from Romania – 216, this is followed by Austria – 149, Italy -134, Greece – 108 and Bulgaria – 106. Spain has a much larger inflow of doctors than Germany, France or Italy and despite peaking at 6,354 in 2019 is still the second highest with 4036 in 2020. The origin of the doctors are also disparate with large numbers coming from Spanish speaking countries such as Venezuela – 756, Cuba – 598, Columbia – 571, Argentina – 351 and Ecuador – 251. Italy has a very small but growing inflow of doctors, rising to 293 in 2020, but given this low number the country representations are small with perhaps Romania with 53 being the only notable representation. The United Kingdom has the largest inflow of doctors, dipping slightly in 2020 but given Brexit and COVID that is hardly surprising. The origin of the doctors in the UK is very different in part due to training as well as historic and traditional migration routes, which are very apparent. It is no surprise to see large representation from India – 1349, Egypt – 1205, Pakistan – 1181 and Nigeria – 834.
