Over a third of 2022 health care M&A deals were in services

M&A advisory firm Ciesco has published a review of global M&A activity in 2022 across the technology, digital, media and health care sectors. In this week’s infographics we look at the split across health care sub sectors by deal volume and value.

There were 765 health care M&A deals for which a deal value was disclosed in 2022, with a combined value of around $231bn. According to Ciesco, the total number of health care M&A deals in 2022 was around four times this, as around three quarters of deals were done without disclosing the deal value. Health care accounted for around 10% of all M&A deals across all industries in 2022 (in terms of volume and value). This was the lowest percentage since 2016.

Of the 765 deals with a disclosed value, health care services accounted for 261 (34%), the second highest proportion after pharma and biotech (which saw 297 deals with a disclosed deal value).

However, the value of deals was much smaller, on average, in health care services. The average deal value of the 261 analysed health care services deals was just $197m – compared to $745m in healthtech – meaning health care services comprised a smaller share of total health care deal value.
