Revenue per bed in rehab markets compared
How do Europe’s four big inpatient post-acute/rehabilitation markets compare on average revenues per bed? HBI analysis for an ongoing ratio report reveals all.
Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland are the only countries in Europe with a substantial and mature for-profit inpatient post-acute rehabilitation market – see our pan-European report on the sector here. Germany is by far the largest market but HBI analysis of some of its largest operators shows they have lower average annual revenues per bed than those in the other three, at €60,000-70,000.
Our figures are for 2019/2020 (whichever is more recent).
The figures are calculated by dividing revenue by the number of inpatient beds, and so do not account for case-mix or outpatient activity, which we think explains the difference. The German market is much more focused on inpatient activity than France and Italy. Unsurprisingly, high-price Switzerland’s figures are 3-4x higher than the rest at €270,000-320,000 but that is also partially related to a lot of outpatient activity.
