The EU digital health start-up landscape

Technology-driven healthcare solutions from telehealth to digital therapeutics have received much attention through the pandemic. We look at the landscape of Europe’s largest players, who have collectively raised over €1.3bn since the beginning of 2019.

The biggest year for funding was 2019 when amounts raised hit €900m, seven times higher than in 2018. Despite increased utilisation, funding total funding decreased to €329m in 2020 and has so far hit €68m in 2021.

However, the 2019 sum is skewed by Babylon’s $550m fundraise and discounting that the sector collectively raised €412m.

Our list includes EU-based booking platforms, telehealth, digital therapeutics, coaching, mental health, telemonitoring and triage/symptom checkers that have raised more than €1m in one round.

It is telehealth that has taken the lion’s share of recent funding, led by Babylon and Kry, plus Doctolib who built in a telehealth solution to its existing booking platform although digital therapeutics, coaching and mental health have started to see significant investments.
