HBI webinar on Value Creation in Healthcare Organisations – Headline News version
HBI hosted a webinar this week on the topic of value creation in healthcare organisations.
The discussion looked at how healthcare providers are using digital tools, operational improvements and AI to build more connected and scalable organisations. We were joined by Klaus Boehncke, Partner at L.E.K. Consulting, and Ilmarin Schietzel, Group CEO of United Therapy, a physiotherapy network in Germany, who shared their perspectives on where value is being created and how organisations can capture it.
A key theme throughout the webinar was that growth is not just about opening more sites. It is about connecting them through shared systems, better data and consistent ways of working. Schietzel explained how United Therapy has built a centralised data platform across more than 100 practices, giving the organisation real-time visibility and making it easier to roll out AI tools across the network. Without that foundation, he said, AI is unlikely to deliver meaningful results.
When discussing where AI is already making a difference, Boehncke pointed to tools such as ambient documentation, automated scheduling and back-office automation, which can reduce administrative work and give clinicians more time with patients. Schietzel added that United Therapy is currently using AI across more than 50 different applications, including capacity planning, tele-physiotherapy and digital therapy programmes.
The speakers also discussed why many AI projects struggle to move beyond the pilot stage. In their view, the main challenge is usually not the technology itself, but making organisational changes, managing implementation and adapting existing workflows to get the most out of new tools.
