Korian launches bid worth €268m for Curanum

Listed French care home group Korian has launched a bid for German group Curanum, which Korian claims would make it the second-largest player in the German market. But will the bid succeed? And what does it tell us about the pan-European expansion of the big French groups?

Korian Medica merger is on the cards

Rumours that Korian and Medica, two of the big four French care groups, are set to merge are growing. The departure of Rosemarie van Leerbergh as CEO of Korian at the start of the year is widely perceived as having been driven by her refusal to work on merger plans.

Where will big French care groups go for growth?

The top four French nursing homes now have a 45 to 50% share of the private market and 75% of the market held by the top 15 operators, according to Jacques Bailet, chairman and chief executive at Medica. He says that the company accelerated its acquisitions in the second half of 2010, as the authorities in 2010 and the first of 2011 have introduced a freeze on any new beds. Medica saw sales rise 12% in 2010, beating its flotation forecast of 10% and expects sales to grow 45% by 2012....

Increasingly, patients with serious medical conditions want to be treated at home. Doing this is also a great deal cheaper – 3-8 times cheaper than in hospital, according to Groupe LVL Medical, one of the leaders in the sector in France and Germany. The company, which is Paris stock market quoted, specialises in providing medical home care in France (although it is not allowed to touch the patient). It moved into Germany in 2001 where its subsdiary Bonitas can touch patients. In the first half of 2010 sales grew 16% to €75.4m with net profits up 56% at €6m. Medica on target to grow sales 45% by 2012

Shares in care group Medica slipped 50 cents to just over €14 after the company confirmed that it would hit all its targets. Analyst Bruno de la Rochebrochard at Raymond James said this removed hope of an upside. He expects further consolidation as the big groups seek to build regional strength to meet the needs of the new healthcare regions....
