The UK is a growing destination for international patients seeking private healthcare
This infographic looks at the growing trend of medical tourism in the UK, showcasing the rising number of international patients seeking private healthcare services. The data is sourced from the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) database.
The number of international patients seeking private care in the UK surged from 1,185 in 2016 to 10,640 in 2023—a nearly 800% increase. The sharpest rise (144%) occurred between 2021 and 2022 as post-COVID travel restrictions eased. Nearly 46% of these patients are from the Arabian Peninsula, with Ireland accounting for 4.7%.
Dr Ian Gargan, PHIN’s Chief Executive, noted that while “medical tourism” often suggests Brits going abroad, there’s significant demand for treatment inside the UK.
For those considering treatment outside of the UK, cost is the main factor, Dr. Gargan noted, with dental care being the most common reason and Türkiye the top destination.
