Affidea acquires Sermesa polyclinics in Valencia

Affidea, the pan-European provider of community based clinics, advanced diagnostics, and specialist services, has announced the acquisition of Sermesa, a well-established healthcare provider in Valencia, Spain.

The acquisition is intended to strengthen and expand Affidea’s outpatient and diagnostic services presence throughout Spain, as part of its wider strategy.

Sermesa, founded in 1988, operates two polyclinics in Mislata and La Pobla de Vallbona, offering medical services including multi-specialty consultations, advanced diagnostic imaging, laboratory analysis, rehabilitation, dentistry, aeronautical medicine, sports medicine, aesthetic medicine, occupational health and (for the first time) home care services.

With around 100,000 patient visits a year, Sermesa’s polyclinics provide high-quality care to both public and private patients, private health insurers (PHIs) and private companies.

Theo Kravvas, CEO of Affidea Spain, told HBI that Sermesa is the right fit for Affidea because it combines high-quality healthcare with a wide array of specialised services that meet the needs of a diverse patient base.

“With well-established clinics in Valencia — a region where Affidea already has a foothold — Sermesa’s comprehensive outpatient model is highly compatible with our own. Adding Sermesa polyclinics to our network in Valencia allows us to expand our reach in the region, thus enlarging access to outpatient services, offering a diversified, multi-specialty care services,” Kravvas said.

“By integrating Sermesa’s expertise and reputation into our network, with their experienced team of over 280 professionals [of which 100 are medical staff], we’re enhancing our ability to provide both patients and private insurers with fast, high-quality, and easily accessible healthcare in more locations.”

Affidea has steadily grown in the outpatient sector in Spain, in particular the Valencian community, having acquired healthcare providers including the Tecma Clinic in Alzira or the Atenea clinics.

On why offering ‘multi-speciality care’ is key to Affidea’s strategy, Kravvas told us, “Today’s patients expect convenience and continuity, and they want access to a diverse range of specialists without unnecessary referrals or delays. Moreover, they prefer to receive these additional healthcare services from their trusted provider.

“Our multi-specialty model allows us to address these needs by offering a broad spectrum of healthcare services through which we can coordinate care more effectively, reduce patient waiting times, and improve overall health outcomes.” Care is also tailored to patients’ specific needs.

The Affidea Group, recognised for its patient safety, operates over 380 sites in 15 European countries, working with nearly 14,000 professionals and serving 14 million patients each year.

The acquisition will increase its network in Spain to 47 centres, serving more than 1.5 million patient visits per year and further diversifying its medical services portfolio. Affidea Spain performs more than 900,000 advanced diagnostic imaging tests a year and works with more than 1,200 professionals.

“Spain represents a significant and growing market for Affidea due to its dynamic healthcare landscape and the increasing demand for private healthcare options. Patients in Spain are seeking quick access to care and demonstrate a strong willingness to invest in high-quality, private healthcare solutions,” said Kravvas.

And as well as the demand for outpatient services, he added, “Spain’s robust insurance sector allows us to serve both privately insured, out-of-pocket and public patients with the same commitment to quality. By expanding in Spain, we are meeting the expectations of patients who prioritise speed, accessibility, and top-tier medical services.”

Kravvas also explained to HBI that Affidea’s decision to introduce home care services reflects their commitment to patient-centred services. “We can reach individuals who may have limited mobility, need continuity in their treatment, or simply prefer the comfort of receiving high-quality medical care in their own homes,” he said.

“Home care allows us to extend our outpatient model beyond the clinic walls, ensuring that our standards of excellence are accessible to more people in more settings.

“With our current foothold, the Valencian market is offering us the opportunity to tap a larger metropolitan area with the support of various centres.”

Sergio Ruiz, National Operating Director of Policlinicas at Affidea Spain, said in a release, “Our polyclinics in Valencia or Madrid play a vital role in providing accessible, high-quality care to the community, and with the addition of Sermesa, we are strengthening this objective. By bringing together a variety of specialties in the community where we already have an established presence, we simplify the patient journey, allowing for more coordinated care.

“Patients benefit from faster access to diagnostics, a wide variety of medical consultations, and continuity in care. This model not only improves convenience, but also leads to better health outcomes by making it easier for patients to manage their healthcare. Our goal at Affidea is to continue to expand our outpatient offering, ensuring that comprehensive care is easily available to more people in the communities we serve.”
