Interview: Anna Rulkiewicz, President of the Management Board at LUX MED

LUX MED, recently bought by Bupa, the international healthcare group, is the largest Polish private healthcare operator with five small hospitals, 161 owned outpatient facilities and about 1,600 subcontracted centres located across Poland. The company had sales of €208m in 2013 and is in the middle of an ambitious expansion plan with the aim of making the group the largest private national inpatient chain. We talk to Anna Rulkiewicz, CEO at LUX MED, about the Polish market and LUX MED’s recent and future acquisitions. With a background in sales and marketing Credit Suisse, Zurich and Commercial Union she joined LUX MED in 2002 as sales and marketing director.

Interview: Emmett Moriarty, Consultant

The amount Russians spend privately on healthcare services has doubled in five years and EBITDA margins can reach 40-50% for operators, yet the market remains deeply fragmented with many fairly unsophisticated operators and no national chains. Emmett, a former VP at Medsi, the biggest Russian healthcare group, has a decade’s experience of investing in healthcare services in Russia and Eastern Europe and now works both for investors and for operators. The former sector leader for health at IFC, the commercial bank arm of the World Bank (and world’s largest investor in emerging markets healthcare), Emmett was previously head of KPMG’s Healthcare Performance Improvement division.

Interview: Ahmed Badreldin, Partner, The Abraaj Group

No other private equity house can match Abraaj’s experience of investing in healthcare services in the developing world. A lead investor in Turkish hospital group Acibadem, which was then sold to IHH, the international hospital chain, Abraaj has rolled out a lab buy and build in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East, has recently started a similar play building a Pan-North African chain of hospitals and has also invested in half a dozen hospital and outpatient clinics across sub-Saharan Africa. G Square, the Pan-European private equity house which specialises in healthcare services, has bought Tracscare, a mid-sized player in caring for people with mental health illness, learning disabilities and acquired brain injuries in England and Wales, from Sovereign Capital. We talk to Tracscare’s chairman Ted Smith about the company, which has 75 facilities, and about the sector in general. Smith, who is chairman of five care groups, has a unique bird's eye view on the UK care sector.

It is rare to come across a totally new concept in elderly care. Yet that is what Catalina Hoffmann, a young woman of 26, came up with when she founded Vitalia in Spain in 2004. A chain of franchised daycentres, it delivers training and treatment to elderly people through the Hoffmann Method, patented programmes targeted at conditions such as stroke recovery, rheumatism, Parkinsons and even Alzheimers. Most patients pay privately to attend. We talk to Hoffmann who is about to launch in Brazil and Mexico. Her next target is Florida.
