European private healthcare sector’s 2019 growth in one chart

Looking at c.200 of Europe’s largest healthcare operators’ 2019 revenue figures using the latest data from HBI Intelligence gives a snapshot of the sector. How does the picture differ internationally and by sub-sector based on our recent update?

The following charts show the revenue growth of just over 180 of some of Europe’s largest healthcare companies organised by sub-sector first, and then by country (minimum €10m revenues and only confirmed figures, with the total shown by the bubble size). Hover over the legend to highlight a sector.

Sorted by sub-sector, it clearly shows that of the largest elderly care groups (grey) are growing faster than the big hospital operators (dark blue) thanks to higher organic growth and more M&A activity. The sector is much more international as we showed last week. Big operators with a heavy focus on outpatient (bright green) are also growing well into the double-digits, which reflects the wealth of M&A available once you nail down the business model of consolidating the outpatient sector.

Patterns emerge at a country-level too. UK (grey) operators are mostly down in the single digits although seem to have fared better than last year while those in Finland, France and Hungary are growing faster (light blue, light purple and orange). Internationals (dark grey, middle left) are also doing well. Hover over the legend to highlight a country.
