How consolidated is the lab market?

Everybody in the lab sector likes to talk about how much it is consolidated across Europe. This week’s infographic assesses that claim: it shows that over half the market is still owned by players with less than €100m revenues and only 15.5% by its top two players.

Compare that 15.5% market share to that of America’s two biggest players (see below) and it’s clear that there is much room left for continued M&A in the sector. HBI founder and chairman Max Hotopf will be using this infographic (among others) to assess the future of the lab sector on Wednesday at HBI 2019.

The most likely targets for further M&A are those in the €100m-€500m bracket since those higher are more likely to exit through IPO, or in the early stages of the PE cycle. One such company explicitly told HBI that it is not for sale. See our HBI Intelligence centre for further information.
