Nurse migration over time

This week we take a look at nurse migration, with an infographic that shows the number of active foreign-trained nurses in a variety of European countries in both 2009, and 2019.

The data, publicly available on the OECD website, shows that of the countries where data was available, over the period studied the UK is by far and away the largest user of foreign trained nursing staff.

Denmark, Italy, Norway and Poland have all seen a decrease in foreign trained staff, while there has been a modest increase almost everywhere else, save for Belgium which has more than tripled, albeit from a low base.

The United Kingdom figure is particularly noteworthy. HBI has been hearing regular complaints recently – especially from hospital and nursing home operators, about the difficulties in bringing both nursing staff and care staff into the UK after the closure of the transitional rules. Changes to immigration regulations due imminently should go some way to alleviating this.
