The HBI Top 250 Preview
This week HBI is publishing our first ever Top 250 list, drawing from a comprehensive database of over 4,000 providers. In the 2025 edition of our annual ranking, we have decided to take a step further than our usual top 100 to give you a ranking of the top 250 healthcare providers in EMEA, based on their 2024 revenue.
The Top 250 rankings, which can be accessed here, examines the top 250 companies, dives deeper into profiling the top 10 companies and any notable acquisitions they have made, analyses the sectors they operate in, their revenue distribution by sub-sector, ownership type, and provides a country-by-country analysis based on representation.
The Top 25 companies are pre-viewed here.
Fresenius Helios (Germany only) came out on top, with German revenue of €7,662 million. Although Fresenius Helios also includes Quirónsalud in Spain, we treat Quirónsalud separately here because its scale is large enough to merit a standalone ranking. Quirónsalud ranks number seven on our list. The combined group achieved organic revenue growth of about 6%, giving a total revenue of €12,739 million.
German hospital provider Asklepios has strengthened its position in 2024, with revenue growing 9.4% from €5,452 million in 2023 to €5,962 million in 2024,
Europe’s largest listed nursing home group emeis is the highest ranking non-hospital group in our list. The company’s revenue increased by 8.4%.
The top 250 healthcare providers generated €218,500 million in 2024. Hospitals (for-profit) remained dominant at €98.3bn (45% market share).
Private equity-backed groups now generate nearly one-third of total revenues, sovereign wealth funds and government-related entities claim over 20%, corporate and institutional owners also have significant holdings and family offices, private investors, and companies with mixed or hybrid ownership structures represent the remainder.
The United Kingdom has the largest representation on our rankings, with 49 companies across various healthcare sectors, followed by Germany with 45, France with 30, Spain with 18, Australia with 15, Italy with 13, Saudi Arabia with 11 and Switzerland with 10. The remaining countries have fewer than 10 companies on the list.
