Tracking French private-public laboratory testing volumes between 2019 to 2024

This week’s infographic looks at the French laboratory testing volumes between 2019 to 2024.

The data is sourced from Assurance Maladie, France’s national health insurance provider.

The infographic categorises tests into private and public. Private tests are prescribed by practitioners in private practice, such as general practitioners or specialists, while public tests are prescribed by salaried practitioners in public healthcare facilities, like hospitals or clinics.

On average, 1,093,045,368 laboratory tests are conducted annually in France, with 847,131,070 (77.5%) performed in the private sector and 245,914,298 (22.5%) in the public sector.

Private sector testing grew significantly during the pandemic, increasing from 739,819,380 tests (78%) in 2019 to 786,217,634 (78%) in 2020 and peaking at 971,264,904 (79.3%) in 2021. This record in 2021 aligns with the surge in testing during the pandemic.

Notably, the trend has remained consistent post-COVID, with 817,941,835 tests in 2023 and an estimated 815,790,522 in 2024, indicating sustained high volumes even after the pandemic.
