Who are Europe’s biggest nursing home groups?

Who are Europe’s biggest for-profit nursing home groups in Europe? In this infographic we look at the biggest 16 for-profit nursing home groups in Europe, using both revenue and bed numbers as a measure of size.

Unsurprisingly by far the biggest two are listed pan-European French giants Orpea and Clariane (formerly Korian), each with around 90,000 beds and revenue over €4bn. The scandal which hit French sector in 2022, centering around claims of mismanagement and mistreatment of patients at Orpea, may have had a catastrophic impact on the company’s share prices and overall financial health, but hasn’t significantly dented its sales (perhaps unsurprising, given how essential the services nursing homes provide are!).

The next biggest are non listed pan-European French groups DomusVi and Colisee, followed by listed Nordic group Attendo.

In general there is a pretty tight correlation between number of beds and revenue, however it isn’t a perfect correlation as some of the groups provide non residential care services, and there is some variation in revenue per bed.
