Record growth in UK insured activity in 2023

The UK private health insurance market grew significantly in 2023. Clearing services company Healthcode sent 10.2m invoices to insurers in 2023. This was a 20% rise across the sector compared to 2022 and brought in £4bn income. The company also provides a sub sector breakdown, indicating which UK sectors are hot and which are not!

The data is split between hospitals and non-hospitals. The biggest hospital specialty was orthopaedics and trauma, which saw 657,000 invoices – up 13% on 2022. Radiology was second in volume (459,000) but only saw a 7% increase and physiotherapy third in volume (317,000) with a 15% increase.

Also impressive in the hospital space were gynaecology and cardiology. These saw jumps of 22% and 20% respectively but from a low base of 223,000 and 141,000.

Meanwhile physiotherapy dominated the non-hospital market with over a million invoices – up more than 30%. Orthopaedics in the space saw 828,000 invoices, an increase of 12%.

Among the UK countries, hospital invoices were up 11% in England, 13% in Scotland, 20% in Wales and a staggering 38% in Northern Ireland.

Across English regions the North East was the fastest growing region, with 18% volume growth YoY. London achieved 11%.
