EMEA PE investment volume almost halved in 2022

Using data from HBI’s Investment Database, we look at how the volume of private equity investments in health care services by year changed between 2017 and 2022.

The data shows that the volume of PE investments grew every year from 2018 until 2021. Then last year it dropped 45%, as unfavourable economic conditions meant many deals fell through – or were put on hold.

As well as the volume of investments dropping, the size of the companies being invested in in 2022 was also substantially smaller. The average revenue across companies invested in in 2020 was €210m; the average revenue across companies invested in in 2021 was €216m; whilst the average revenue across companies invested in in 2022 was just €96m.

The dearth of major PE investments has continued so far in 2023, but there are signs that activity is starting to come back.

The HBI Investment Database, which allows you to search by country and sub sector as well as by year, is now available to HBI Intelligence subscribers.
