Hospital consolidation in France, Germany and Europe

This week, we look at the extent to which the for-profit hospital market is consolidated in three key countries – France, Germany and the UK. These figures are a snapshot of the position based on revenues in 2020.

You can see the data behind this infographic in our for-profit hospital report in HBI Intelligence, and our company database.

Green portions of the dial above relate to the revenue earned by the top five players in each country as a percentage of the total market, red represents the remainder. As of 2020, the United Kingdom had the most consolidated market with Circle-BMI, Spire, Ramsay and HCA in particular having substantial shares. You can read about the latest deal the NHS has made to utilise the UK’s private sector as ‘surge capacity’ during Omicron here, and about the latest on the Circle-BMI prospective sale here.

Over in Germany, Europe’s largest hospital market, Fresenius is dominant with Asklepios and Sana having significant shares too. Germany is noteworthy for having lagged behind its peers in switching over to outpatient hospital care.

And finally in France, the top five players in our snapshot had a substantially lower share of the total market. With around 20% of the market, Ramsay Santé led the field, but by the time you get down to the fifth or sixth player in the HBI Intelligence list of operators by revenue, you are looking at market shares for those groups of under 3%.
