Infographic: The challenges elderly care faces

With an aging population, it’s no surprise that elderly care has quite the challenge on the horizon in order to meet patient needs.

Data from global strategy consulting firm L.E.K Consulting, shared at our HBI 2022 conference (register for early bird tickets to HBI 2023 here), suggested that by 2030, 10.6 million over 70s in the UK and EU will have dementia – up from 8.1 million in 2018, with notable increases in those 90+ with dementia, rising from 1.9 million in 2018 to over 3.0 million in 2030.

Not only will providers have to consider an increase in demand – but they will also need to consider catering methods of care to specific patient preferences. Data also suggests 32% of patients would prefer to be treated at home, 29% in family care, 27% in assisted living and only 12% in care homes.

This level of difference may be difficult for providers to tackle. Across the sector there are major workforce issues and significant shortfalls – which are all expected to worsen by 2030. This is resulting in countries seeking to recruit from overseas, in order to meet the demand of the sector.
