Hassab plans Pan-African lab chain

Seha Capital-backed Hassab Labs, the third largest Egyptian lab chain with 38 labs has signed a deal with Moroccan insurer Saham. So far it has set up two labs in Morocco and the plan is to add another three this year. Expect other countries to follow soon.

Do PPPs work in the Developing World?

The failure rate is high for big, operator-led PPPs in the Developing World. Big PPP projects where private players win a long-term contract to run a large public hospital or deliver primary and secondary care to hundreds of thousands for a per capita price often fail, But hundreds of less formal, more ad hoc projects are working well.

Artemed plans hospital in China

Artemed, the mid-sized German hospital and nursing home group, has signed a memorandum of understanding to build a hospital and seven outpatient centres in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. It is believed to be the first wholly foreign investment in healthcare services in China.

No other private equity house can match Abraaj’s experience of investing in healthcare services in the developing world. A lead investor in Turkish hospital group Acibadem, which was then sold to IHH, the international hospital chain, Abraaj has rolled out a lab buy and build in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East, has recently started a similar play building a Pan-North African chain of hospitals and has also invested in half a dozen hospital and outpatient clinics across sub-Saharan Africa. Ahmed will be speaking at Healthcare Europa 2015 on April 28 in London.

Italy’s largest hospital group heads for Algeria

San Donato, the family owned group which is the largest Italian private hospital chain, has turned round San Raffaele, Italy’s largest university and research hospital, which it acquired in 2012. Meanwhile, it is about to sign a contract in Algeria.
