Private equity spots opportunity in Ethiopian labs

Kenyan private equity firm, Ascent (Ascent Capital Africa Ltd), has invested $2.5m in an Ethiopian lab group. Ascent took a 50% stake in Medpharm Holdings Africa and will look to grow the diagnostics laboratory aggressively. We spoke to Guy Brennan, a partner at Ascent.

POCT will split the diagnostics market in two

Point-Of-Care-Testing (POCT) technologies are increasingly effective, affordable and available. Consumers can already pick up single-use tests for a variety of conditions from their local pharmacy. Within 1-3 years devices with internet connectivity will transmit health data to mobile devices. Traditional labs will be shielded by POCT’s specific advantages in the short term.

Georgie Jones, co-founder of Great Minders, explains that there is a growing demand for home-based elderly care services.

IDC-Quiron to manage Mallorca clinic

The IDC-Quiron group, the Spanish hospital chain created in October 2014, has signed an integration and investment agreement with the owners of Rotger Clinic in Palma de Mallorca. The deal, which is not an acquisition, will make IDC-Quiron the biggest private healthcare provider on the island.
