Unilabs grew organic sales 5% in 2015

Despite all the price pressures on the lab sector, Pan-European lab group Unilabs achieved 5% organic growth in 2015 and saw sales rise in every country, apart from Spain. Costs have also been cut. CEO company doctor Jos Lamers claims to have finally persuaded the big three suppliers to agree to Pan-European pricing. Unilabs debt mountain meant that it still made a net loss of €8m for the year, but that is down from over €100m in 2014. We talk to Lamers.

The mating endgame at Unilabs

We hear that Labcorp, the big US lab group is the latest potential bidder to kick the types at Unilabs, the Pan-West European lab group which Rothschild has put on the block. We analyse the bidders in an endgame of consolidation.

Unilabs achieves 7% organic growth

Unilabs CEO and company doctor Jos Lamers is cock-a-hoop over second quarter sales growth of 7.1% at constant exchange rates and sees a trend towards the public sector outsourcing. Unilabs, the Pan-West European lab and imaging group, was a late entry in to the race to buy Pan-Euro lab group synlab this summer and Lamers is keen to make more acquistions. We talk to him about the results and how he sees the lab sector.

Cinven’s €3 billion bet on labs

Cinven has placed a €3bn bet on the European diagnostic laboratory space, by agreeing to pay a higher than expected €1.85bn for synlab Group, a multiple of just over 12 times current EBITDA. It will combine synlab with Labco to create a truly Pan-European lab group with pro-forma 2014 sales of just over €1.4bn, nearly twice that of its nearest rival. But why bet €3bn on a sector where tariffs are falling and operators have no control over pricing? And could the French authorities block the deal?

Cinven scoops Labco at silly price

Private equity house Cinven is to buy Labco for an enterprise value of just €1.2bn. The news came two weeks after Labco’s IPO failed. We reflect here on the EBITDA multiple and at what this means for the rationalisation of the European market.

Luz Saúde suceeds with foreign patients

Luz Saúde, the second largest Portuguese hospital chain, has more than doubled sales from medical tourism to €18m in seven years by bridging the cultural gaps between its Lisbon hospital and international patients, according to a presentation at the IMTJ Summit.

Unilabs on road to recovery

Company doctor Jos Lamers appears to be hitting his targets to turn around Unilabs, the Pan-West European lab group that he joined as CEO 18 months ago. He has certainly been active – 8 out of the top 11 managers have changed, as have 40% of the top 100 employees!
