Suppliers flock to Africa

The exhibitor halls at the Africa Health exhibition, which took place in Johannesburg last week, allowed a grandstand view of Africa’s developing healthcare market. Suppliers told us opportunities within the continent are multiplying. And a fascinating battle is emerging for contracts and bragging rights.

Discovery to trial PROMs

The South African medical scheme, or private health insurer, Discovery Health, is interested in outcomes measurement and will soon trial patient reported outcomes measurements (PROMS) in collaboration with the provider Intercare, says Darren Sweidan, head of the Health Professional Unit. This is the one of the first such schemes in the country, as outcomes measurement has been stymied by a fragmented system and resistance by clinicians, he claims.

Life Healthcare to buy in new European country

The South African hospital group, Life Healthcare, is set to enter its fifth international market through a European deal, Group Medical Director, Dr Stephen Taylor, revealed to Healthcare Nova. The deal could be announced within the next few weeks, says Taylor, who now spends half his time in Poland, helping Scanmed, Life’s first European acquisition, raise its standards.

Lancet shows the way in African labs

Dr. Peter Clarke from South African lab group Lancet laid out his pan-African expertise at our 2016 Breaking Barriers conference. What business models work in Kenya? What about Nigeria, to the other side of the continent? Most private equity houses and institutional investors are daunted by Africa, but Lancet has expanded to 11 countries in just 12 years.

“Fast and furious growth” – A survey of private healthcare operators in Europe and Emerging Markets

Big for-profit healthcare operators expect to grow sales at over 10% annually for the next five years in Developed and Emerging Markets, but what do they see as their main challenges? A fascinating picture is revealed in a new survey of 81 mainly CEOs and CXOs in 37 countries of predominately large hospital chains, diagnostic labs and imaging players, commissioned by Siemens Healthineers (the new name for Siemens Healthcare) from Healthcare Business International. The quantitive survey was followed up with depth interviews with a dozen respondents.

How expensive are South Africa’s private hospitals?

February's explosive report from the OECD on the unaffordability of South African private hospitals may have political repercussions. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi told the South African press the study proves the market is broken – something he has “been telling South Africans all along, but no one wants to listen”. Here we look at the report and talk to the head of health at the OECD about its findings and also to Jonathan Broomberg, CEO of Discovery Health, the largest administrator of medical schemes in the country.

South Africa’s Motsoaledi throws private insurers a bone

A fascinating interview with the South African Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, by Business Day has shed more light on the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) policy to provide mandatory insurance for all South Africans, rather than the mere 16% covered today. Oddly, Motsoaledi criticised his ministry’s own December 2015 white paper which envisaged private insurers evolving into little more than complementary payors. Instead, he expressly confirmed that this will not happen. The interview also reveals further details of the timetable, funding and plans for low-cost medical schemes.

NHI won’t hurt big three

South African analysts say the country’s proposed healthcare reform will not hurt the private sector. The National Health Insurance (NHI) white paper was released last week and proposes a radical restructuring of both the public and private healthcare systems. By 2025, the health minister wants one unified system. But critics say the policy is unaffordable and will be challenged by elites with private health insurance, including civil servants.

South African low-cost medical scheme founders

Plans for a low cost medical scheme for the 15m South Africans outside of the wealthiest 20% have foundered, thanks to resistance from doctors. A government White Paper which would improve access to primary care for poor South Africans through public providers is imminent.
