It is striking how overlooked Northern Europe is by the big French care home consolidators. The UK is much more attractive and a lot cheaper than Spain. And investors and operators should also be looking hard at the Nordic region.

Nordic countries are moving towards healthcare systems where money follows the patient and there's a broader range of private providers to chose from. How are operators responding to greater competition? Aino Health enters roll-out phase in Europe and the Gulf states

Finnish preventive care group Aino Health Management Oy is entering an aggressive roll-out phase by expanding in Europe and the Middle East. Already in Finland, Sweden, Germany and the UAE, it is in talks to enter Saudi Arabia as part of a $54m deal –and potentially the UK in 2017.

Unilabs grew organic sales 5% in 2015

Despite all the price pressures on the lab sector, Pan-European lab group Unilabs achieved 5% organic growth in 2015 and saw sales rise in every country, apart from Spain. Costs have also been cut. CEO company doctor Jos Lamers claims to have finally persuaded the big three suppliers to agree to Pan-European pricing. Unilabs debt mountain meant that it still made a net loss of €8m for the year, but that is down from over €100m in 2014. We talk to Lamers.

Humana to IPO at up to €355m

Swedish care provider Humana is to IPO on March 22 in a listing which will value it at up to SEK3.3bn. The listing follows IPOs from Capio and Attendo in Sweden and from Pihlajalinna in Finland in 2015.

Report: Teleconsultation – the future of healthcare?

In the United States, teleconsultation reached sales of $100m in 2015 and is expected to hit 1m online visits this year. In Europe, things are moving much slowly. Regulations are not yet in place in most countries, payors have enormous reservations and doctors are not willing to get paid less for online consultation. But apps like Meedoc and Min Doktor in the Nordic countries are creating patient bases and insurers are starting to incorporate telehealth as a differentiator. Big private operators such as Medicover, Terveystalo and José de Mello are all deploying telehealth today.

Solid Nordic results suggest more IPOs

Nordic healthcare groups Capio, Attendo and Pihlajalinna have released solid annual results after floating in 2015. Political risk appears to be fading in Sweden and new public-private opportunities are under way in Finland. Could rivals like Ambea and Humana file for IPOs in 2016? We look at the figures.

Ambea grabs Solhagagruppen

Ambea, the big Swedish elderly/disabled care group is to buy Solhagagruppen in a deal which Ambea claims will make it the largest player in the disabled sector in Sweden. We talk to Ambea CEO Fredrik Gren about the deal, the Swedish market and Ambea’s strategy. Gren is speaking at our annual conference.
