Colombia’s statutory insurers on edge

Colombia's Minister of Health Alejandro Gaviria discussed the country's statutory insurance crisis at the private hospital association's 2016 ACHC Congress in Bogotá. Gaviria is wary of public subsidies to statutory insurers and rules out healthcare reform over the next couple of years. Instead, he argued, the system must draw on private funds to overcome liquidity problems.

Private equity to enter Chilean payor-provider Masvida

Dutch developer FocusCura’s heart monitoring app attracts payors

For the first time in Europe an insurer has agreed to fully reimburse app-based healthcare service, according to app designer FocusCura. Dutch patients using “hartwacht”, an app monitoring heart and cardiovascular diseases, will be fully reimbursed by insurer Zilveren Kruis. The group has developed a comprehensive platform connecting patients and carers – claiming a 26% drop in emergency admission rates.

Discovery to trial PROMs

The South African medical scheme, or private health insurer, Discovery Health, is interested in outcomes measurement and will soon trial patient reported outcomes measurements (PROMS) in collaboration with the provider Intercare, says Darren Sweidan, head of the Health Professional Unit. This is the one of the first such schemes in the country, as outcomes measurement has been stymied by a fragmented system and resistance by clinicians, he claims.
