We know that there is no shortage of institutional money destined for healthcare. For long term and defensively minded funds the attractions are obvious. The glut may also be about to grow as Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) joins the consortium looking to take Chinese operator, iKang, private. OTPP was also interested in the German lab group, synlab, last year. So are investors increasingly building portfolios across European and Emerging Market healthcare?

SPS builds Swiss nursing home arm

Swiss real estate group Swiss Prime Site (SPS) is buying nursing home operator Senior Care from property and hotel operator Boas-Yakhin, in French-speaking Switzerland, for an undisclosed amount. That allows Tertianum Group, SPS’s operating arm in the assisted living sector that claims to be the largest Swiss elderly care provider by revenue, to expand its network nationally.

Confinimmo spends €60m in Germany and the Netherlands

Belgian REIT Cofinimmo, which owns a portfolio worth over €3.3bn, has bought several medical offices in the Netherlands for €29.5m with yields ranging between 7% and 8.3%. Earlier this week, it also acquired the Kaiser Karl rehabilitation clinic in Bonn, Germany for €30m as well, to be rented to 800-bed German operator Eifelhöhen-Klinik AG under a 25-year double net lease, for an initial yield of 7.32%.

Unicare moves into rehab

Unicare, one of three largest Norwegian private operators, has moved into rehabilitation, buying Fram, a hospital near Oslo. Unicare CEO Tom Tidemann told Healthcare Europa that he plans to enter new areas of healthcare in Norway as the private sector expands.

Alloheim snaps up Senator

The German care market is reaching new heights of consolidation after Dusseldorf-based Alloheim acquired Senator Group of Lübeck. A well-placed source says the price paid was a “rich one” at around 8-10 times EBITDA. The combined group will have around 15,000 beds. That would leave it in third position behind Korian and Orpea who have been expanding into Germany at breakneck speed.
