Romania: Back to the drawing board

Expect an interlude of a year before any major reforms are unveiled in Romania. January saw the president withdraw his controversial plans to introduce a Dutch model with competing insurers buying services. That followed a week of riots. Last week the Minister of Health said that he did not expect any new reforms to see the light until 2013. Conveniently, that kicks them down the road after this autumn’s elections....

Romania to move to Dutch model

Romania will privatise statutory healthcare insurance in 2013, in a move which creates a new market worth over €4bn a year and that may also lead to many public hospitals being put under the management of private companies. The move will be announced week commencing December 12. Insurers tell is they are sure it will pass as it has the backing of the outgoing Romanian president.  We look at the implications....

If the differences between East and West Europe are big in hospitals, in the care home sector they are often a gaping chasm. Apart from Slovenia, the private sector remains all but non-existent or in fragmented into mom’n’pop businesses across the region. But changes are coming, as countries start to open the sector to private investors and start to restructure hospitals, which often contain many of the infirm elderly, who would be in care homes in the West.
