Outpatient sector in South Africa and Brazil, psychiatry in GCC + hospitals in India

We continue to add to our database of the Top 1,200 private operators in Emerging markets.  We've just looked at outpatient chains in Brazil and South Africa, which are growing fast offering primary care, some specialist outpatient work and a bit of ambulatory surgery. We've also identified two rare psychiatric hospitals in the GCC where there are huge taboos around mental health. The database gives you a clear and accurate overview of the healthcare services sector from Chile to China.   In South Africa we found a thriving outpatient sector.  Intercare (which we interviewed here) has recently sold a stake to Mediclinic. We identified several direct competitors including Advanced Health, which is listed on the JSE.  In Brazil we found a series of fast-growing outpatient clinics targeting rapid roll outs. They include Dr Consulta, GlobalMed and Clinica Fares. The database now has 90 outpatient chains. In the GCC a good contact identified the two reputable players in psychiatry, a taboo area. We plan to add more private psychiatry units. In India we've added a range of operators including regional players in medicalised homecare.

Lenmed looks north

South Africa's fourth largest hospital chain is already in Mozambique and Botswana and is keen to expand into other Sub-Saharan countries such as Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. That might be with specialist outpatient chains.  But there are plenty of opportunities in South Africa as The Competition Commission stops the Big Three from making more inpatient acquisitions. We talk to Lenmed COO, Amil Devchand.

Intercare deal could be a game-changer

This summer, Mediclinic, the listed South African, Europe and Mid-East hospital giant, quietly bought into Intercare, a South African outpatient, day hospital and sub-acute and rehabilitation hospital network which specialises in value-based healthcare, providing the best outcomes at the lowest costs. Here is why we think the acquisition is a game changer and why this is a business model that could be exported internationally.
