NGS Technologies – Impact on Healthcare Sector: Presentation, Thomas Grunfeld, Senior Adviser to the Norwegian Clinical Genetics Analysis Platform

Next generation genetic sequencing (NGS) will have a profound effect on the healthcare landscape. Within the foreseeable future, NGS will be cost-effectively and readily available to large patient groups - we can even envisage most citizens having their exome sequenced in post natal screening programmes. Grünfeld, a former McKinsey consultant, M.D. and molecular geneticist, is better placed than most to analyse its impact, as Norway is one of few countries which is piloting a nationwide programme to deploy NGS technologies to widespread clinical practice. What will such platforms look like, who will do the work and what impact will it have? Thomas looks specifically at the impact on private diagnostic labs and healthcare providers. Presented at the Healthcare Europa Annual Conference 2014, The Return of the Bull Market.

When TripAdvisor Meets Healthcare: Presentation, Philipp Goos, Managing Director, Jameda

TripAdvisor-style sites are set to change the structure and behaviour of private healthcare provision. They are growing fast in the Nordic region, Germany and East Europe. The largest is Jameda with 600,000 written reviews and traffic rising at over 60% year-on-year. Philipp looks at how these sites are changing behaviour and the implications this has for operators. Presented at the Healthcare Europa Annual Conference 2014, The Return of the Bull Market.

Global Health Partner sees price drops but brighter outlook

The real problem in elective acute care in Sweden has been a series of price cuts, according to Daniel Ohlman, CEO of Global Health Partners, a chain of 20 ambulatory clinics mainly in Sweden, but also in Denmark with one in the United Arab Emirates.

Exeunt omnes

Europe's largest healthcare service companies are queueing up for the exit in 2014. Expect Apax-owned Capio, the Swedish, French, German, British hospital group, to seek an IPO in Sweden after the election. Euromedic, the Pan-European imaging services group, is also likely to IPO or go for a trade sale in the second half of 2013, as will Median Kliniken in Germany. Cinven-owned UK hospital chain Spire is veering towards a trade sale, but could also IPO. We look at prospects.

Sonic sees Germany as strong

Sonic Healthcare has told analysts that it sees Germany as “its most sustainable and fruitful market” and that there are opportunities to further consolidate the market. The bullish announcement, which accompanied good annual results, surprised some analysts. They point out that German labs remain in the dark about budget ceilings and the spectre of a hike in the lucrative private insurance GOA rate still lurks in the wings.
