Raised Turkish ceiling could be a curse – not a blessing

The raising of the ceiling on the amount private hospitals in Turkey can charge to patients who are part-funded by the state SKG payor could well prove to be a curse. A condition for the rise was that the authorities would start to actually enforce the ceiling. That could prove to be very bad news, as most hospitals have been charging way over the ceiling.

Polish prospects ahead of the 2015 election

The Polish private healthcare sector expects little action ahead of the next general election in 2015. But there could yet be surprises. We look at opportunities in the country, now that Bartosz Arłukowicz, the current Minister of Health, has failed to implement meaningful healthcare reform. Should the next election be won by the statist Law & Justice party, which is ahead in the polls and which is broadly opposed to private sector involvement in healthcare, this reform may be tabled completely. New funding planned for Slovenian nursing home sector

Since our last review of Slovenia, the country seems to have seen huge private sector growth. The number of beds in nursing homes has climbed to just under 20,000, up from under 1,000 beds a couple of years ago, as the government plays fast and loose with concession hand-outs. Yet these numbers might be misleading. Boris Koprivnikar, of the Association of Social Institutions of Slovenia, explains why the nursing home sector is not progressing, despite appearances, and what is being done to resolve this.

Czech hospital prospects ahead of election

How profitable are the Czech Republic's public and private hospitals? How indebted are they? A new report sheds some light on the situation, showing that some private hospitals are running 16% EBITDA margins. Given that the next general election could lead to a new wave of functional privatisations, this could open up a big - and, apparently, profitable - new sector.
