Doctoralia innovates across Latin America

In an unusual innovation, Doctoralia, the international rating and online booking platform, is partnering with patient associations and getting doctors to rate doctors as part of an awards programme. Owned by its Spanish founders, Doctoralia is now active in over 20 countries, particularly Latin America. It claims patients book 100,000 appointments a month on its platform. We interview Frederic Llordachs, co-founder of Doctoralia. This month, we are also writing a detailed survey of how such sites are developing in Emerging Markets from Chile to China.

Prospects for private healthcare in Colombia look good. Achieving universal public healthcare for 48m people is impressive but the system is creaking and the government is willing to turn to the private sector to fill tertiary gaps. There is also the prospect of private investors taking over some of the massive vertically integrated payor/providers.

Report: Colombia – Tax free zones, HMOs and a friendly government

Few countries offer such exciting opportunities for private healthcare as Colombia. The government has set up a series of tax-free medical tourism hubs for Central America, the Caribbean, Venezuela and Peru. Meanwhile the mandatory insurance system which covers 97% of the 48m population is creaking and big payor/providers could be sold to private investors. Colombia's amalgamation of public, private and not-for-profit insurers and operators faces a severe crisis. Small wonder private equity houses such as Tribeca, SEAF Colombia and Advent International are eyeing the sector.

Christus deal first of many in Colombia

Texas healthcare group Christus Health is investing $35m in Coomeva, the second largest payor in Colombian public healthcare as well as some provision. It will pump cash into Coomeva's faulty insurance operation and grow its provider network once the sector liberalizes in 2016. Industry expert Carlos Felipe Muñoz thinks that this is the first of many deals as the sector opens up to foreign private investment.

Private hospital free zones sprawl across Colombia

Colombia's free market government is fuelling the development of the private sector with economic free zones. The main incentives is a cut in corporate tax from 25% to 15%, VAT exemption in procurement and tariff discounts on medtech imports. Five private hospitals have set up as free zones since 2013, more are set to follow.

ehealth grows in Colombia

Colombian e-health project Axon is convincing health insurance companies to contract chronic disease management with them. It has already taken on anticoagulant and oxygen therapy with patients referred from the public system.
