FREE BLOG Remote surgery with robots isn’t going to take off for a long time

During the last Iraq war there was much talk of surgeons in the USA remotely operating on hideously wounded soldiers in Iraq. On the face of it, this technology could transform international healthcare. After all, one of the main reasons why big US brands like Mayo and Cleveland have struggled to set up abroad is the understandable reluctance of top American surgeons to fly around the world. Robots would enable them to operate from their home city.

Interview: Anna Herkmen, Eastern Europe Supervisor, Acibadem

Largest Turkish hospital group Acibadem is making a big play for international patients in the Balkans. The company is 75%-owned by Malaysian investment fund Khazanah Nasional and listed operator IHH Healthcare, and 25%-owned by the founding Aydinlar family. Acibadem runs 16 hospitals and nine outpatient clinics in Turkey, and owns 50.7% of Sistina hospital in Macedonia. The group is looking particularly hard at Romania, where 1,000 patients travelled to Acibadem for treatment in 2012. We talk to Anna Herkmen, head of Acibadem’s efforts in East Europe, to find out more.

Interview: Dr Hasan Kus, Healthcare Business Development President, Anadolu Group

A third of all sales at Anadolu Medical Center (AMC), a JCI accredited hospital in Istanbul with 209 beds which is affiliated to John Hopkins in the USA, now comes from healthcare tourism. Last year foreign patients rose to 5,400. The main hospital is not-for-profit and part of the Anadolu Foundation, owned by Anadolu Group, one of the largest conglomerates in the country, but plans are afoot to put the healthcare tourism arm into a for-profit operation. Anadolu has just constructed a 82 bed on campus hotel to take outpatients and their families and is planning to add outpatient facilities in Romania and other client countries. The campus will also soon boast a University facility for teaching doctors, run by Anadolu Foundation....

Acibadem grows sales 31%

As the only big quoted Turkish hospital group, Acibadem is an interesting indicator – it is the only Turkish hospital group whose results are freely available. Consolidated net profits fell 35.5% to TRY 11,453,399 (EUR4.8m) in 2010. But that hides a massive 31% sales hike and even larger EBIT increases, as Acibadem expands abroad.
