With close to 300 dialysis centres in 19 countries, Diaverum's Dag Andersson claims to run “the most global healthcare service in the world”. The company is majority-owned by private equity house Bridgepoint, which hired JP Morgan in January 2013 to review the company's strategic options. We speak to Andersson about Diaverum's future.

Raised Turkish ceiling could be a curse – not a blessing

The raising of the ceiling on the amount private hospitals in Turkey can charge to patients who are part-funded by the state SKG payor could well prove to be a curse. A condition for the rise was that the authorities would start to actually enforce the ceiling. That could prove to be very bad news, as most hospitals have been charging way over the ceiling.

Alpha buys Euromedic’s labs in the Czech Republic

Pan-European diagnostic operator Euromedic has purchased Polish player Numedic. The company, part of the larger Numed, was sold by its original management team after Numed’s radiotherapy business received an investment from Enterprise Investments in March 2013. Largest Turkish hospital group Acibadem is making a big play for international patients in the Balkans. The company is 75%-owned by Malaysian investment fund Khazanah Nasional and listed operator IHH Healthcare, and 25%-owned by the founding Aydinlar family. Acibadem runs 16 hospitals and nine outpatient clinics in Turkey, and owns 50.7% of Sistina hospital in Macedonia. The group is looking particularly hard at Romania, where 1,000 patients travelled to Acibadem for treatment in 2012.
