Fresenius gets out of respiratory therapy

Industrial gas giant Linde has bought French homecare provider Calea. The company was part of Fresenius Kabi, the worldwide infusion/nutrition and transfusion business. The acquisition is one of several that have turned Linde into a serious player in the French oxygen market. Meanwhile, the German Federal Cartel Authority has approved Fresenius Kabi’s acquisition of US blood player Fenwal Holdings, which gives Fresenius Kabi a 33% share in blood donation in Germany.

Bergman plans massive growth

Bergman Clinics, the largest private ambulatory clinic chain in the Netherlands, plans to grow 2012 sales of €70m nearly four times to €250m by 2016. The group, owned by the Malenstein family and entrepreneur Jaap Maljers, is looking for an external investor to take a minority stake. Parsa quits Circle

Baxter swoops on Gambro

As predicted here, Baxter - the world’s largest peritoneal dialysis operator - has purchased Gambro, the second-largest player in haemodialysis in Europe, for SEK 26.5bn (€3.08bn) from EQT and Investor. The deal is seen as a way for Baxter to present itself as a "one-stop shop" to payors and providers, and to better compete with Fresenius, the world’s largest player in dialysis.

Radical reform to follow as Italy uncovers massive healthcare corruption

Accusations of corruption, inefficiencies and hidden agendas are rife in Italian healthcare. The president of Lazio region has been forced to step down following a scandal; the government of Lombardy, a key private-sector stronghold, has also been rocked by allegations. The media has hounded Mario Monti, forcing him to walk back pro-private sector statements. As a backdrop to all of this, Health Minister Renato Balduzzi’s spending cuts are ravaging the private hospital sector.

All change in dialysis

The dialysis sector looks certain to consolidate fast in Europe. Bankers say that Bridgepoint is keen to exit Diaverum, which it bought near the height of the boom in late 2007. Meanwhile, they also say that Baxter looks near certain to buy EQT-backed Gambro.
